Why am I getting 'Not a valid path' error when running the update?

This error usually occurs if you have altered the drive during the update Wizard, eg. from c:\earnie to f:\earnie. To correct the problem put a '\'at the end of the path, e.g. f:\earnie\

What exactly is the Directory for Data?

The Directory for Data is the drive or subdirectory name where you wish to store the company and employee details. It is not neccesarily the same location as the program details.

Error 106 - Component Move Data Failure

This error usually indicates a corrupt CD. Your IT department could try copying all the files from the CD onto your hard-disk and running the installation from here. Please contact support or call 0844 815 5671 for advice on how to do this. If this doesn't resolve the error we will arrange for a new CD to be sent to you.

Error 115 - Specified File Cannot Open as Write

This error is usually caused by a permissions problem. You should ask your IT department to check you have full read/write permissions to the install location. They should also ensure that none of the files are read only.

If the error persists after the above checks, try to establish which file causes the error. Then re-name this file in the installation location and run the CD again.

What is the recommended procedure for installing EARNIE?

The document "install.doc", which you can find on the EARNIE CD, explains the various ways that EARNIE can be installed. If you do not have Microsoft Word, the same information can be found in "install.txt" which can be read using any text editor such as Notepad.

I have found a utility in my EARNIE directory called REGCLEAN. What does it do?

If, after a successful installation of EARNIE, you experience error messages telling you that DLL or OCX files are not properly registered you should run the REGCLEAN utility.

REGCLEAN is a Microsoft utility which is installed as part of the EARNIE setup. It resides in the UTILS sub-directory under the main EARNIE program directory. This utility scans the Windows registry and fixes any problems it finds. If you let it correct any errors it will create an 'Undo' file in the UTILS folder. Double-click on this file to reverse the corrections REGCLEAN made.

How do I change the location of EARNIE from one server to another?

  • Map a network drive from a workstation to the server where you want to install EARNIE
  • Create a sub folder on the network drive you have just mapped. (This is important as EARNIE may have problems running on a root driver)
  • Install EARNIE to the new program location. Ensure you select TYPICAL in the install options
  • Perform a WORKSTATION installation from one of your workstations, ensuring
you set the destination location to the same path as you installed the typical installation to
  • Check that the shortcut on the workstation that you use to run EARNIE has the
new 'target' and 'start-in' locations. If not, modify them to correct
  • If you have your licence details you can try running EARNIE from the new location at this stage. When you run EARNIE, it will detect that it is unlicensed and prompt you for your license details. If you do not have them, skip this step and continue
  • If you decide to enter your license details, EARNIE will run and you can try opening the Demo company to verify that EARNIE has installed to the network correctly
  • Assuming you also require a new location for the data files, create the folders you require for this and copy the data files into them. EARNIE data files take the form xxxxDATA.mdb and xxxxLOG.mdb where xxxx is the company number
  • Copy the file 'E32-sys.mdb' from the original location to the new program location, that is the same location as the earnie32.exe file. E32-sys.mdb contains a list of the companies and their respective data locations and will need modifying in order for EARNIE to locate the companies correctly
  • To modify the E32-sys.mdb file to point to the correct data location you can do one of the following: a) Phone Payroll Support and ask them to help you perform an SQL to change the locations using the E32SQL utility b) Attempt to open each company in turn and when EARNIE fails to find the correct location it will ask
you if you want to browse for it. Browse to the new location and repeat for all
the other companies in the system
  • When you are able to access all of the companies from one workstation,
repeat steps 4 & 5 for all of the other workstations in your system

Does EARNIE support UNC network paths?

No. You must use mapped network drives to access EARNIE across a network.

How do I find out what the program location is in EARNIE?

Go to the Help menu and select About EARNIE. Click the button More Details
and you will see the Program location.

Error 623 - File Transfer Error

This error usually indicates one of the files in the install location is read only. You should ask your IT department to remove the read only flags on all files in this location.

If you are experiencing any of the above errors, and do not have any IT resource, please contact Support for advice.

Which CD do I use for a new installation?

Always use the latest CD you have received. All the updates provide full working versions of the software.

How do I add a new workstation on EARNIE?

Find where you run EARNIE from by checking the path of the program in Help & About EARNIE. Run a workstation install on the new machine pointing it to the
above location.

Why can I not do workstation installations to my local C: drive?

*This information does not apply if you are installing onto a stand alone machine.

A common mistake during workstation installations is to enter the local C: drive
when asked to enter a destination location. The purpose of the destination location
is actually to tell EARNIE where the files are installed on the server.

Although the workstation installation does place various files on the local drive its main function is to set the workstation up to use the files placed on the server by
the 'Full(Typical)' install. This means that the destination location entered for a workstation install should be identical to the location entered on the 'Full(Typical)' install.

Important notePlease note: If you have already performed an installation to a local drive, correct the situation by removing the folder you installed to and then perform a correct installation to the network.

Why is the workstation installation of EARNIE not working?

When running a workstation installation of EARNIE, you will be prompted for the installation directory. The program directory should be specified, for example F:\earnie, not C:\earnie, which is the default drive.

Can I use my update CD to install to a new location?

Yes, every update CD we send out is a full working version of the software.
See the installation FAQs available on each CD.
